Tasty Lunch at Paréntesis Pizzeria, Puerto Varas

I’ll admit, I’m a Lonley Planet snob. Particularly when it comes to eating out in a new destination, I like to go by recommendation. I don’t mind trying something new, but by far I have always had the best eating experiences when following the trusty guidance of others.

When it comes to me and a hungry tummy, Alec will vouch for me in saying not much stands in the way of satisfying the hunger.

On this particular day we headed out to get Italian, only to realise the place recommended in Lonely Planet was out of town. We didn’t plan on walking far from the town centre (in order to stick to our time schedule with bub’s sleeps) and didn’t feel like catching the bus. Spaghetti bolognese didn’t sound too appealing (from a restaurant recommended for its sandwiches rather than its pasta), so we scouted the streets to make sure there was nothing else that caught our fancy.

Paréntesis Pizzeria didn’t look overly appealing from the outside, it blended in with most of the other afuera (outdoor) settings along the street. As soon as we stepped inside though, the aromas caught our attention and sealed the deal.

The service wasn’t fantastic, but the food and the atmosphere more than made up for it!

Behind the bar in a semi on-view kitchen, an older man was rolling out what looked like thin crust pizza bases using an old wine bottle. His face almost characature like, he made it look like an art. His grandson (we assumed) was lingering behind the bar with his toy car, from the corner of his eye taking in everything his abuelo was doing.

A family run business by the looks, it felt homely, but professional.

The food was sensational. Ravioli in which you could taste all the individual fillings. The accompanying salsa bursting with flavour. When ordering the pasta you choose a pasta and then a salsa to go with it. The simple, yet amazingly tasty serano ham, roasted artichoke and champiñon salsa in olive oil brought back memories of our stay in Rome.

Even the decor was impressive, with the quirky light fittings that caught our attention. We will have to return to try the pizza another day. Perhaps I’ll need to write to Lonely Planet and suggest they include this place in the next issue!
