Refugio Frey Walk, Great for All Ages

Refugio Frey Walk - Great for all ages // intrepidmonkeys.com

Walking down the street holding my mum’s hand when I was young, I had to take a few quick steps every so often to keep up. when I got to double digits, things didn’t change much as my mother has considerably longer legs than mine and I seemed to stop growing at age 12 – apart from the womanly bits! Our Refugio Frey walk was a flash back to those days. Due to a particularly late start, Alec set a cracking pace.

Getting Out to Walk Frey On Little Sleep

On this particular day, the littlest monkey had woken up at 2am and not gone back to sleep until close to 5.30am!! Little toad. Although drifting off in our arms, he had mastered the art of sleeping with his ears open. As soon as we attempted to put him back in his KinderKot he did the stiff-man trick, eyes wide open as if he’d been awake the whole time.

Eventually Alec managed to rock him to sleep pacing lengths of the living room. However instead of attempting to put our ‘angel’ back into his own bed, Alec bought him to bed with us. Lovely. To all those people who love sleeping with your kids, I have no idea why! Ollie wriggles and grunts (more than Alec does) and he was only in our bed for 3hrs before he was ready to start the day!

Refugio Frey Walk is Great for All Ages & Abilities

Enough about sleepless nights though. This post is about a great walk for all ages. Being a Sunday we expected a few people on the track. There were quite a few cars parked in the huge Cerro Cathedral car park (that I’d imagine is packed in winter) over towards the start of the hike. Surely they can’t all be people doing the Frey walk though?

Well the number of people we passed on our way up certainly explained the number of cars. There were people carrying packs and chatting away in english, couples conversing in spanish, babies not even 6mths old taking it all in from a baby carrier on dad’s front, and heaps of young families.

Of all the walks we have done in Bariloche, Frey certainly had the most kids under the age of 10 walking it.

Understandable too since the terrain is fairly easy with a gentle climb and plenty of ups and downs to keep things interesting. There are also at least 5-6 waterfalls and numerous bridges to break up the walk. We saw one family with three little ones having boat races with sticks down one of the streams.

When Alec was asked if we’d seen any kids by themselves on our way by a young girl roughly 8yrs old, and her friend who looked a similar age, I was surprised to think they were on their own. Later we passed the parents and a couple of younger kids, but there must have been others further ahead (or exploring hence why we missed them on our ascent) who were a good 15-20mins in front of the rest of the party. Clearly the rumours of muggings while walking up Cerro Otto are not applicable to the Refugio Frey walk which was nice to know.

The walk seems to attract all sorts, with varying abilities. It seems you can enjoy the walk even if you have a big beer gut that acts nicely as a camera rest, like one tourist who looked a little out of place. On the other end of the spectrum, as two runners jetted past us I had to hold my mouth so I didn’t giggle. Imagine this… both guys wearing skins (skin tight leggings) with the first guy sporting a distinctively girly looking bum!

Beautiful Scenery on the Refugio Frey Walk

Although we only walked until the start of the forest, approx 1 1/2 hrs, the scenery was diverse and interesting. Views of Lago Gutierrez and the surrounding mountains were nice as we walked amongst some burnt out trees and bambo that was making a comeback and thriving.

Beyond the forest is some spectacular scenery if your walking party can manage a 4hr hike to the actual refugio. Alec did this walk a couple of weeks earlier thanks to the guidance from TrekBariloche, but in the reverse direction starting the walk by catching the chairlift up Catedral. More details and photos of that day to come in a separate post!
