What I Learnt About Climbing Volcán Villarrica // intrepidmonkeys.com

Burning my lungs, I could taste the sulphur. Trying to use my glove as a breathing mask I attempted to gasp some ‘clean’ air. To my surprise, at 2800m I was not affected by the altitude at all. My legs were burning, but dodging the toxic fumes in between happy snaps was definitely my priority as we walked around the perimeter of the smouldering crater.

Great Pasta at Parentesis in Puerto Varas // intrepidmonkeys.com

I’ll admit, I’m a Lonley Planet snob. Particularly when it comes to eating out in a new destination, I like to go by recommendation. I don’t mind trying something new, but by far I have always had the best eating experiences when following the trusty guidance of others.

Colourful Street Art Valparaíso // www.intrepidmonkeys.com

Navigating the streets on our way to Pablo Neruda’s house was a great introduction to the brilliant street art in Valparaíso. Another taste of Chilean culture at its best… we asked a guy stopped next to us at some lights which way to go. After telling us directions, he proceeded to usher us all the way to Neruda’s house (some 5-10mins drive away).

Cerro San Cristòbal, Santiago // www.intrepidmonkeys.com

Today we walked up (half of) Cerro San Cristòbal, Santiago. It was a lovely walk, the streets lined with Chilean families getting out to enjoy their Sunday together. We were pleasantly surprised by the number of beautiful gardens to stop off at on the way up, including a Japanese garden. The public pool halfway up was packed. People young and old were escaping the heat of the sun, cooling off  with a dip in the pool.
