Leave a piece of fruit within reach of our 10 month old baby, or in a bag on the floor, and it will be demolished skin and all! We could understand this behaviour the first few times we caught our son tucking into a nectarine or pear that we had left in the baby bag after an outing. But when we found him munching through banana skins we couldn’t believe our eyes!

We’ve had many queer looks as we walk down the street with Ollie in the pram munching on a (whole) banana.

In awkward Spanish, shop owners have tried to tell me

su bebé come la cáscara de banana (your baby is eating the banana skin).

My reply, ‘I know’.

What follows next is usually a series of gestures as the assistant tries to show me (thinking I didn’t understand them the first time). Only when I put my finger in front of Ollie’s mouth with some banana on it and he turns away preferring to naw at the skin do they understand. I nod, saying

I know “esta loco” – he’s crazy.

Health Benefits of Eating Banana Skin / Peel

Being responsible parents (i.e. after about the 3rd time he did this) we googled eating banana skins to make sure it was safe. Turns out our little monkey is far more health conscious than either of us gave him credit for!

According to Livestrong.com:

Banana peels are also rich sources of potassium and contain much more soluble and insoluble fiber than their flesh.

Banana peels also contain tryptophan, which increases serotonin levels in the body and affects mood, much like the drug Prozac does.

In addition to eating banana peels, they can be used to rub on your skin to stop itching, reduce inflammation, remove warts, smooth out wrinkles, get rid of acne, control psoriasis, and improve skin tone and texture.

This was backed up by Mail Online:

Researchers in Taiwan discovered banana peel extract can ease depression as it is rich in serotonin, the mood-balancing chemical. The skin was also found to be good for eyes, as it contains the antioxidant lutein which protects eye cells from exposure to ultraviolet light — a leading cause of cataracts.

How to Eat Banana Skin / Peel

As appealing as our son made it look to eat banana skin, we were not willing to give it a try. If you are in a similar boat, most websites suggest the following alternatives on how to eat banana skins:

  • Boil the skin or peel of a banana for about 10mins before eating, or drink the water once it is cooled.
  • Blend bananas (skin and all) in a juicer or blender for a healthy smoothie.
  • Fry the banana skins – apparently fried banana skins are served as a delicacy in some asian countries.

So there you have it! Eating the skin and all of fruit and vegetables is healthier than just eating the sweet juicy flesh. One word of warning I noticed on a few websites was always wash fruit and vege thoroughly before eating the skin. You don’t know what pesticides were used, if any, to spray the them.

Would you try eating banana skin after reading this post? I think I might be game to try a whole banana smoothie… too bad we don’t have a blender here in the apartment in Bariloche, ha! I’ll just have to wait 😉
